Spray Tan Prep and Aftercare Instructions

A great tan is half your work and half what the client does around it. Send these instructions before and after every appointment so the result looks even, lasts longer and never streaks. Copy them into a message, or make them a saved story with the matching spray tan story templates.

Prep: 24 hours before

  • Shower, exfoliate and shave or wax at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Skip lotion, oil, deodorant, makeup and perfume on the day.
  • Arrive with clean, dry, product free skin.
  • Do any manicure or pedicure before, not after.

What to wear

  • Loose, dark clothing and sandals or flip flops.
  • Nothing tight: waistbands, bra straps and socks can rub the solution.
  • For the deepest color, many clients go without underwear or wear something they do not mind marking.

Aftercare: the first 24 hours

  • Keep the skin dry. Avoid water, sweat and tight clothes until you rinse.
  • Wait for the window your artist gives you before the first rinse.
  • Rinse in lukewarm water with no soap until the color has set, then pat dry, never rub.
  • Moisturize daily from day two to keep the glow even as it fades.

How long it lasts

A spray tan usually lasts seven to ten days with good aftercare. Light, oil free moisturizer every day and short, cooler showers stretch it; long hot baths, pools and harsh scrubs cut it short. Book your next tan about a week out so you are never without a glow.

Make it a client handout
